Ultramarathon (randonneur) Riders

Subject says it all. I am a longer-time Randonneur but I have to use a more upright bike now because of neck issues. I have used an Asama folder for about a year on tours, but the frame broke a few days after a 200km ride last weekend (not during it!). So the Asama is toast and I'd like something better. I take the train a lot to start tours and the folder was very convenient. I am considering doing some longer rides (200, 300, 400, 600kms) this year and next, and want something up to it. So I'd like to know people's experience with touring or ultra rides.

Barry
BC Rando

Experiences With µ24tr

Hello,

my µ24TR is now two moths and nearly 900 km in use. For that I will give a field report.

- after 5 km all rear spokes were loose. I had to fix them on my way to work,. Nice job.
- after 500 km the cassette was loose
- the luggage rack has deep buckle from my Ortlieb-Bag
- the right shifter (GripShift) is fixed for eternity. We crashes several Allen Keys to get it off. The screw does not move.
- the finish is not very impact-prrof. A powder coating or anodization would be better

This is the only bike which I did not build up by myself. And I know why I normally do this. Dahon should keep an eye to build up quality and detail problems. The system is OK.

But it makes fun to ride with the bike. There are a lot of peaple asking me how it works and they are suprised how simple it is. Even in ICE-train there are no problems with other people. I would say a folding bike has got a good image.

CU,
Armin

Speed Pro Tt Stopping Distance

Is it just me, or do you also have an issue with the stopping distance of the Speed Pro TT. In particular, going down hills with just a moderate slope, my brakes do not bring the bike to a complete stop unless I plan WAYYYY ahead, lets say at least 100 feet, if not more. Even on level ground, there is no such thing a being able to lock the brakes up, its always a gliding stop. Not a pretty situation when a car pulls in front. I have upgraded the brakes to the Kool Stop pads and saw very little improvement.

Perhaps its me or my bike? - I ways 175 pds

I'm just thrilled to bits with my new Speed Pro which I've been using as my daily commuter for a month, and which is now folded away invisible behind my desk as I write.
I love the balance, steering and overall responsiveness and as I am a dyed-in-the-wool old time racer (track and street) I wonder how it would do in a race.
Mu Sl Or Jetstream P8?

So i placed the order already for the JetStream P8

but i actually fell in love with the Mu SL first before i found the JetStream P8

the only reason i kind of chose the JetStream P8 over the Mu SL was due the suspension.

However the Mu SL is 2 kilo lighter than the JetStream P8

the price difference is less than $300, so i can really go either way, i can always change my order.

So, now i'm kinda leaning back toward the Mu SL

The reason why i'm minding so much about the weight is because i'll be adding a BionX PL 350 that's an additional 8 kilo on top of the Mu SL 9 kilo (17 kg combine), so if i go for the JetStream P8, that's 11 kg + 8 kg makes it 19 kg combined

so say if i go for the MU SL, then for "suspension" the only option i'll have will just be the seat saddle upgrade, which IMO i think it is not as effective as having the suspension on the wheels frame like the JetStream P8

going for the JetStream P8 i'm replacing the sit with the Biologic PostPump, i could do that with the Mu SL as well, but then i'll have no suspension at all

...and ahhh well.. the roads here are quite bumpy.

Planing to do a long daily commute of 50 km each way

So i'll like to hear your thoughs

Tire Mileage

Yesterday, as I was completing a ride on my '96 Helios P8, I felt a pronounced "bumpety-bumpety-bump" coming from my rear tire. It wasn't a flat tire. I saw a strange round rubber protuberance in the center of the tread. After removing the tire, I discovered that the tire was completely worn through and it was the rubber tire liner extending through the tire. The tire was the original Schwalbe Marathon and the recorded mileage was 3632 miles. My question is...how many miles can I expect to get on a tire that is used mainly on road surfaces?

Jetstream P8, Matrix Or Speed Tr

The time has come for me to choose a new Dahon model, the money is not an issue as I'm buying it on the ride to work scheme which has got tax relief and N.I. relief so I would be saving 40% of the cost of any bike. I currently commute 14 miles a day round trip on the A4 Bristol, Auk. It has got a few long hills and some bumpy areas but nothing major. When I first looked at the Dahon 2007 models my first impressions were that the Jetstream XP is a great choice as it has got everything, but after searching through the forums learnt that the Pantour front suspension hub can cause a lot of problems and also the XP is not available in the UK for some reason. How would you experienced Dahon users compare these three bikes? Jetstream P8, Matrix and Speed TR. If I go for the Jetstream I'll be installing a rear dual drive hub to have the same range as an XP. What do you think? Thanks beforehand for your advice.

Are Dahons Overpriced In The Eu?

See this topic for previous discussion...

Dahon bikes overpriced in the UK?

It has been stated that the more than 40% (after accounting for taxation differences) difference in prices for Dahons is due to the 40% tax levied by the EU for products manufactured in China/Taiwan.

Odd thing is that some bike companies (e.g. Specialised) manage to keep their bike prices fairly similar between US and EU. How do they mange it?

In the EU a Dahon will cost you over 40% more than in the US. This is a vast price difference and means that Dahons do not offer such good value within the EU. Unfortunately, there in not much in the way of reasonably priced competition in the folder market (applies in USA also) therefore there aren't a lot of alternatives.

However, there is a lot that Dahon can do to even things up. If Specialised can do so, then so can Dahon. Dahon are the worlds largest manufacturer of folding bicycles, and as we are all trying to be greener these days, then making folders affordable to more commuters will go some way towards encouraging more of us to leave our cars at home and cycle to work at least part of the way.

Please give us your opinions...

Edited 08 June 2007: Since starting this thread it has become clear that it isn't the EU as a whole that has Dahons overpriced, but the UK. It seems that since this poll started several customers in the UK have saved themselves a lot of money by sourcing their Dahons from Germany. I hope Dahon take note and do something about the rip-off UK pricing.

Coaster Brakes

You can find out about coaster brakes over here...
Coaster Brakes

Coaster brakes are rear brakes that are activated by pedalling backwards. This means that you cannot move the pedals backwards, because the brakes will activate as soon as you attempt to do so.

Coaster brakes were designed specifically for those with small hands (e.g. kids), or those with disabilities that prevent them from using hand-operated lever brakes effectively. They are also suitable for those users that simply prefer to use foot-operated brakes.

The purpose of this post is to see how popular coaster brakes would be if Dahon were to make more models with this option. If a model were to be offered with coaster brakes, then it would be unlikely to also be offered with standard lever-operated brakes as an option.

I hope all members will cast a vote here, so that this poll is not skewed by only coaster brake users voting. Remember, to vote with your purchasing preference. Thanks.

Why Do You Commute by Bike?

I'm just curious what people will say on this topic, since we've got quite a few bike commuters here. Obviously this includes multi-modal commuters. Consider yourself included if you commute by bike and train, or even if you drive your car 20 miles, take a folder out of the trunk, and pedal 3 miles to your office.

Me? My main reason is that I like to ride, and it's a way to get in some cycling mileage during the week. By not taking the shortest routes to and from work, I can get in between 24 and 30 miles a day on work days. It would be nice to say that I'm trying to save the planet, but honestly that's not what motivates me to ride.

(Later edit)

Drat. "To save money" was supposed to be one of the choices, not a header First time I posted a poll with choices, and it seems I can't change it. Oh well, if that's your reason, there's a choice for "you haven't given my reason".

This was one of the reasons I bought it.
Having stripped the bike of mudguards, luggage rack and kickstand
my electronic scale read 11.9kg.
If this is a mistake on dahons part it must be rectified immediately as riders like myself make decisions on published specs.
Luckily for me the dealer has agreed to exchange the bike for something else - I'm still undecided about what!

Dahon owners - what do you think?

I have a theory that the vast majority of Dahon owners love their bikes with a passion. This poll is an opportunity to gain data for my theory.

We have seen some dissatisfaction expressed in this Forum recently, and I am sure it is a small minority who have been unlucky. It is to Dahon's credit that they let us all express our opinions without editing which would reduce the value of the opinions expressed here.

However, like most members of a family, I am sure that many of you have something that you don't like about your bike. If you have a criticism, please write a few comments. It might help with future model designs. If there is something you love, why not put that in too.

I'll get the ball rolling. I bought my bike in July 2005 - a Speed TR. I love it to pieces. It is without question the best bike I ever owned. I love the SRAM Dual Drive, the Thudbuster seatpost and the Big Apple tires. My minor niggles are:
1) Fold is not as compact as the web site states, so the bike doesn't fit a 20" bag, and is a squeeze to get into our airplane (which was the whole reason for buying it!)
2) The reach is a stretch for me with the BioLogic II Frame Geometry. I think I would have prefered the old geometry and telescoping handlebars.

So, bottom line, would I buy another Dahon if I lost this one? Without hesitation, yes! I am sure they will be even better in the future.

Happy and safe riding to all,

Dawn

To my knowledge, there are no SPD options available, either quick release or folding (if you know of one PLEASE chime in.)

I've been thinking about going to a machinist and having some spindles made which can replace the spindles in SPD pedals but which have the QR shank on them. Maybe I'd have a run of them CNC'd.

At this point I have no idea what the cost would be. What I would be offering are replacement spindles only, and you would be responsible for buying pedals and replacing the spindles or having the LBS do it.

So, please choose from one of the options above, and if you want one, about how much would you be willing to pay?

— Spalding

There has been quite a bit of discussion about spoke breakage on this forum. As Dahon Tech points out (correctly, in my view), there is probably a tendency for the forum to select for people reporting problems (as reports of spokes NOT breaking would be a bit pointless).

This poll is an effort to sample the forum-participating Dahon ridership and see if it is possible to gauge the scope of the problem (is it a problem?) and also if there is a relationship between rider weight and the number of spokes broken.

Thanks for your participation!
Steve

PS: I broke 4 over many hundreds of miles on one wheel of my Helios XL. Hence, this poll.

Perhaps you can also mention where you're ordering from so we can get a sense of where the good dealers can be found. I ordered from an out-of-state company to avoid paying the sales tax . The lowest price actually came from a dealer in-state, but state taxes would raise the total price paid by over $115.

seat for Helios XL

I didn't find the "biologic" seat very biological--painful/numb crotch after first 15 miles.
I use the Hobson Easy Seat, with dual oval pads and sheepskin cover. Also smaller and lighter.
http://www.hobsonseats.com/products.htm
Paul

Dahon for recreational riding vs. Giant?

I have been thinking of purchasing a bike for recreational riding for years and am finally ready to do it. My hesitancy has been that I don't know that much about bikes, don't have anyone to ride with and as a single woman have wondered if I can transport it around by myself. I want a bike that does not have the bar across the middle, is lightweight, under $300 and comfortable. I have a Honda SUV (CRV) and am willing to buy a rack, although if the bike would fit as easily in the back that would be great.

I have not found many ladies' bike without the bar. I have found a dealer that will order a Giant Cypress ladies bike for me. It is $300 and they have none in stock so I have to order it without the opportunity to ride it. I just learned of Dahon's this weekend when I saw a boater riding a Mariner at a Marina. He let me ride it and it was so easy to get on and off of, I now want to know more about Dahons. What would you recommend for recreational riding that a lady could handle lifting, etc.? How many gears do I need? I plan to ride on bike paths at Silver Comet, Big Creek Greenway and perhaps a dirt/gravel path as will. Probably won't try mountain paths or too many hills
at least not initially. Are the seats comfortable on Dahons? I'm a novice, haven't ridden since I was a kid, but I am looking forward to trying it again.

Favorite upgrade

Hi Everybody,

I'm interested to hear about the best upgrades you've added to your Dahon bikes. Let me know what and why? My personal favorite is the Cane Creek Thudbuster seat post. Although it's a bit pricey, it is amazingly comfortable and totally transforms the ride.

Have you replaced your 'regular' bike w/a folder?

I'm curious about this. I'm thinking of getting a Dahon Vitesse, but it is expensive enough that I'm thinking if I should just stick with a cheap folder and spend the big bucks on a nicer 'stiff' bike.

What do you all think? Does your Dahon do it all or close enough that you don't feel you need 'stiff' frame one any more?
