Common Issue Of Vitesse P18?

Hi,

I wonder if VP18 owners have the similar issuse and hope if you and the Dahon Rep could help out. My VP 18 was purchased 3 months ago and the front shifter/derailleur worked prefectly but in the last weeks the front shifter could no longer be 'shifted' to "H" level (but could be shifted to the "L" and mid level).

I thought it was related to the cable/derailleur settings so I went back to the seller and asked them if they could help make some adjustment or inspection if some wrongings I could have done. However, the technicans (actually 2) of the seller, without even giving my bike a look, UNANIMOUSLY lectured me that it is a common issue that was casued by the fact that the front shifter was supposed to be used for triple chainrings, but VP18 came with a double one that the "H" level is not useable.

I recalled at the time of the purchase, the seller (the same technicans) told me there is an intermediate "shifting" level between "H" and "L" that could be used (i.e. 3 useable levels).

Now I found it very confusing.

Did you encounter the similar issue or I am oversensitive? Your advise is very much appreciated.

Cheers,

KK

Cadenza Bottom Bracket Noise?

Hi

My Cadenza has an eccentric bottom bracket and has developed a very irritating and loud creak when being peddled - it's at its worst going uphill. I thought it was the pedals but I have changed them and the noise has got worse if anything. The bike gets a lot of use and gets quite dirty so I'm not sure if it needs taking to bits, cleaning and greasing or if the bottom bracket is failing.

Any suggestions? I'm happy to tackle most jobs on bikes but I have previously failed to replace a conventional bottom bracket. Does the presence of the eccentric bottom bracket make this easier or harder and are their specific tools required in respect of the ebb? (I have the conventional bottom bracket stuff.)
New Wheels On Dahon Mu Sl

Hi,
I live in Sweden and I am pretty new to to Dahon community. I bought a Dahon Mu SL early summer to have it commuting on the train to and from work. That's working fantastic, the bike is great and considering the low weight it suits the purpose perfect!

During the summer I have found out that now and then it is also great riding this bike on other occasions. Sometimes where the roads are less good and tyres like the Schwalbe Big Apple would be of my choice.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit these fat tyres on the Mu SL and if so what parts should I look for? I want the easiest possible solution, meaning wheels that can have Schwalbe Big Apple or at least bigger ones than the Kojak. Then I possibly would like to have the same type of cassette for the gears as I currently have.

Just so that I easily could switch wheels depending on where I want to go.

Anyone who have done this, have any ideas or am I simply on the wrong track? ;-)

Shimano Nexus 8 Friction?

In general discussion, I rambled too long about why I chose a new Dahon Mu XL Sport.

So far all seems good -- I get an intermittent noise from the back that I've decided (after pouring a little water) is just spoke squeak. I'll have my local shop tune them after a few more days/miles.

I bought it at what I think is a local business, although they do have three stores in the Albuquerque area. Before buying, I noticed I didn't think the rear wheel (with the Shimano Premium Nexus 8 hub, freewheel style) coasted as much as it should. The sales/tech guy did note the chain may have been too tight and loosened it so there is just a bit of play. That didn't really make much difference. A week later, I took it to the store near me for some accessory and asked their techs to check the same thing. Everybody agreed it didn't seem to coast as much as they would have guessed (certainly way less than any derailer type free-wheel. But they have virtually zero experience with these geared hubs and just weren't willing to state it isn't actually OK. And we all are allowing that maybe it will loosen up after it gets broken in.

I know this is tricky to measure, so here's one method easy for me: I put it in gear 1 (lowest) and rotate the crank at 60 rpm (1 revolution per second). After I stop cranking, the wheel coasts to a stop in 5 seconds (coincidentally, about 5 1/2 wheel revolutions). Cranking backwards, the friction allows the wheel to soon catch up to the crank speed, making it then just as if I were cranking forward. Although there is no obvious sound of rubbing or the like, it does seem to slow more quickly through certain portions of the wheel revolution than others. And there is absolutely no way it is free enough to coast back and forth until stopping with heavy-side down, which the front wheel and even my derailer freewheel hub easily do.

Questions:
1. Will this loosen up with time?
2. If so, how best to break in: riding in lower gears, higher gears, frequent shifting, etc.?
3. Although there are no obvious bad sounds, I notice that the usual freewheel ratchet-clicking sound (which, as Shimano states, only occurs in gears five to eight of this hub), only takes place when cranking backward, not simply from the wheel coasting. Is this normal?
4. Could it simply be over-packed with grease? If so, should anything be done?
5. Is it actually faulty and should be taken back? How do I convince the local shop it is defective?
6. Could it be miss-adjusted?

If we get to the last option: It does seem sort of like a conventional hub with the two end nuts overtightened like you could do on old coaster brake hubs and standard cone hubs, although there is absolutely no feel of binding bearings. But while I feel I could make such an adjustment myself, I would like to work with the detailed Shimano instructions and torque values. But being brand new, I shouldn't have to be doing this. As you can imagine, I don't feel the techs at the local shops are up to speed on this hub enough to be working on it.

I really appreciate any additional information or advice any of you can give me.

I bought a used 2006 Piccolo D3 a few months ago. It came without a manual. I just realized that my seatpost doesn't lower the way I've seen in pictures of folded Piccolos. Instead of leaning on the wheels and the bottom of the seatpost, my bike unsteadily puts all its weight on my brake handles and the gears.

What could be causing this? How can it be fixed?

I attached a picture of a properly folded Piccolo, with the lowered seat post, a picture of my bike with its permanently raised seatpost, and an image of the two latches on the seatpost. The latch circled in red raises and lowers my seat. The latch circled in blue doesn't seem to do anything. Could it be the source of the problem?

Joule Dynohub Bearing Replacement

Replacement of the cartridge bearings in the Joule hub is possible and not very difficult for the mechanic (home or pro) with basic tools and decent mechanical skills. A somewhat lengthy account of the process begins HERE. The cost for new bearings and special home-made tools should be less than $10. These hubs are actually pretty well-made; there are two things that are likely to fail:
1) the output connector and its associated metal parts, which can become corroded, and plastic parts, which could break if mistreated, and
2) the bearings. These are pretty much guaranteed to fail sooner or later. But "later" is more likely, as the bearings are sealed cartridges. I got 5,530 miles out of the hub whose bearing replacement is described. This was riding year-around in Chicago, with a rider 200 pounds plus a backpack; not an easy life for these bearings. YMMV, especially if you are lighter and/or do not ride in the Winter.

Based on my experience with this overhaul, the most likely reason for increased friction in the hub is the plastic connector parts. There is a very small clearance between the bearing on the output side and the gray plastic connector housing. If there is any distortion in the plastic, there will be friction. Fortunately, this will not cause much resistance. The hub whose service was described had some visible wear on the back of the connector, indicating some prior interference; yet the wheel perfomed normally, a least until the bearing went bad.
Steve

Cadenza Rear Dropout Spacing

I am considering buying a Cadenza to which I would like to fit a Rohloff hub gear.

The Rohloff requires a 135mm frame dropout. However, I cannot find a definite spec for the rear dropout spacing on the Cadenza frame.

From what I have gathered so far (from several hours Googling) the specs are as follows:

2007, 2008 - 132mm, but 'built to withstand' 135mm hubs
2009 onwards - 135mm

I also gather it is bad practice to attempt to spread (or 'cold-set') aluminium frames if the spacing is too small.

Can anyone confirm the spacing on the Cadenza? Am I worrying unecessarily?

Thanks for any help...

Just Confirming Measurements For Future Ordering

Just want to confirm the measurements of certain items since I do have to order online. Thinking of future upgrades.

Getting measurements from Dahon specs of my Speed D7:

Tires - 20" x 1.75

I'm assuming I should get tires of the above size. If I'm ordering through ThorUSA, that tells me I can order the Marathon Plus. Is that right?

Handlebar - 6061-T6 (equals to 31.8 diameter?)

I'm not crazy about the t-bar that's on the D7. Would like to get a more cruiser style handlebar. I'm assuming that any handlebar with a 31.8 diameter will fit the folder.

Comfort handlepost.

Thor already confirmed I can order this for my bike (once they come in - whenever that is). However, I don't know how much closer this comfort handlepost will bring me to the handlebar really. For example, without any special attachments like the aber hallo in place, if the noted distance from the saddle to the handlebar is 25" to 25.9", how many inches closer would the Comfort handlepost bring the handlebars to me? If the amount is less than an inch, it may not be worth getting.

Inner tube for tires

I'm assuming tubes that are 20" x 1.50-2.50 (AV) would fit. I did see some on BIKEUSA that had slime already in them but I'm wondering if that would make it harder to inflate because of the slime inside them.

Spare Tire For A Folder.....

I have seen tires for larger bikes that are folded up and take up little room, but none of them seem to be for 20 inch folders. Next March, I will be basing in a small Mayan village for a week with a friend or more and riding my MuP8 on day trips to see a good many local ruins, some of which are some distance on dirt tracks and most that I hope to get to are generally unseen by tourists.

I had to replace the original back tire, when it developed a bulge on the sidewall and then I got a Kenda Kwest Tandem to replace the Kenda Kwest piece of crap, that left me on the side of the road when a mere flat screwed up the sidewall. The biks shop assured me that it was better and it does seem more solid on the sidewall. I do worry that the mechanic had such a problem getting it on, because getting it off would be hard as well.

The front tire is the original that came with the bike two years ago, except for the Slime inner tube in it. Yes, I am toying with replacing it at some point before March, 2011, maybe with a Schwalbe Marathon, but right now I am looking for a spare tire that won't take up much space. I am guessing that if I take some duct tape along, it could help me use a tire longer unless it was horribly damaged, but this could be silly. Thoughts?

I was feeling almost bullet-proof until my tire flattened and the sidewall was damaged. I did also have some too flimsy tools to get the tire off very easily, but that will never happen again. It got me to thinking a lot more about potential problems for the planned trip.

Looking for suggestions......

Jack Handlebar Diameter

I've got a Jack. I'm thinking of changing the handlebars. I know the clamp diameter is 31.8mm. But does anybody know the grip diameter please?

Sheldon Brown's site http://sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-handlebars.html implies it will be 23.8mm, but I want to make sure, so that shifters and brakes will fit OK.

By the way, I want more comfort, and it seems to be reall difficult to find bars with a big sweep with a 31.8 clamp diameter, so I'm thinking of these: http://civiacycles.com/components/loring_handlebar/. Anybody got any similar suggestions, maybe bars without quite such a sweep?

Cheers.

Bottom Bracket / Chainring Replacement On D5

Hi,
I have a Vitesse D5. Unfortunately the current bottom bracket is on its way out.

I see I can buy a 'like for like' replacement from dahon-spares in the UK.
http://tinyurl.com/38zp6bj

But, for various reasons (I won't bore you with. unless you really want to know!) I'd like to try something more radical and convert the bike to single speed or maybe fixed.

* However * to use this I'd ideally need a bigger front chainring.

So I'm looking for alternatives to the D5's 38tooth one.

For example: Does anyone know if the one from the D7 fit?
http://tinyurl.com/2w6f9wq

Failing that can anyone tell me the spec of the bottom bracket fitted to the D5 (and I'll go hunt around myself)?

Many thanks in advance.

Hubstripping For Sale...

I just saw THIS at Hubstripping.com. I'll be sorry to see it go, if someone doesn't take it over. I've learned a lot from the links. Thanks to (IIRC) Datako for pointing me to this site in the first place. FWIW, many of the links to maintenance of the Shimano hubs, and some first-hand reports of hub service, are now archived on the Dahon forum, so life can go on without Hubstripping.
Steve

How Can I Stretch A Gear Cable?

I have a bike with a temperamental front derailleur, and it needs a new cable cos the present one is fraying.

Rather than fit a new cable and then have to adjust it later cos of cable stretch. I would like to pre-stretch the cable before fitting it, because the barrel adjuster which one would normally use to adjust the cable is jammed.

Can anyone suggest how to fully pre-stretch a gear cable before fitting it?

Yea, Yeah, Yeah, I know I'm obsessive!

Paul.

Dahon Helios Gear Convesions

I have a Helios 8 speed that I really enjoy much better than my road bike. Is there a cheap way to convert it to a 27 speed? Would this be by changing out the rear rim and the crankset, or is that ill-advised? I want to do some road touring with my Dahon, but, don't want to spend $1500 on the Pro TT quite yet.....Would like the added gears though!
