Bike Ms: City To Shore Ride 2010

Bike to create a world free of MS on Sept. 25 & 26 2010

This spring I joined this forum on a quest to ride a bike again. Eighteen years ago I sold my previous bike due to moving into a condo & the regulations of storing a bike. Six years ago I had my 1st MS attack including symptoms of vertigo. I've since been walking for MS the past five years. Four years ago I started my own WalkMS team, Walking Warriors. The last two years I've walked VIP raising over $1000 individually. Last year I volunteered at the BikeMS PA Dutch Bike ride.

Back to how I found this place. Well the urge to try riding a bike was just not leaving my head. I started searching the internet for an inexpensive used bike (disabled limited budget & didn't want to waste too much money, if I couldn't ride). Pondering where I was going to store this bike, if I bought one. I came across folding bikes (problem solved) on Craigslist. Then surfed over to Ebay to see what they had on folding bikes. That's when the research went on for a good used quality & economical bike. Thanks to the information listed on this forum, I definitely decided on a Classic III Dahon. And yes, after awhile of trial & error I am riding again

Would like to invite all of you for the opportunity to join the well renown City to Shore bike Ride & help raise awareness & money for MS. Below is the link to join my endeavors to defeat MS:

http://bikepae.nationalmssociety.org/site/...51&pg=entry

***Recently received the event photos from MS PA Dutch Ride. Want to run through them & see if I spot any folders. If so, I will post them here. For anyone that participated in the PA Dutch Ride, thank-you!

I walk today, because someday I may not be able to. I walk today, in hope that someday may never come. I walk today, for those less fortunate in the progression of this devastating disease. I walk today, in hope for a cure of this disabling disease. I walk today, in hope that our future generation never has to endure MS. Through the funds raised today, may my hopes be fulfilled tomorrow. Join the movement to create a world free of MS. Come join in the efforts of the Walking Warriors. We are WalkMS to defeat MS.

Longest Ride On My Speed Tr

I participated in the Tour de Braz ride on Sunday here in SE Texas and rode 40 miles (my longest yet) on my Speed TR (new 08). The left pedal required tightening at the crank midway through the trek and the LBS (which was a ride sponsor) fixed it at one of the rest stops. Weather was hot, humid, windy, and dry. Heat index was in or close to the low 100s at its worst. Wind was more of a bother and I went through the gears a lot as conditions changed. Shifting was flawless. The stock saddle was ok but I'm sure a Brooks would have been more comfortable.

My Cateye Strada wireless computer experienced some intermittent signal loss during the first half of the ride but repositioning the sensor angle and computer seemed to fix the problem.

Overall the Tour was well organized and it had a great turnout of cyclists. My TR was the only folder in the group and it got the attention of a few riders. The most interesting question from them was "what is it"?

Trip Through The Woods In Sauerland (germany)

Inspired by Datakos nice pics of the Scotland trip, I took the camera with me on todays trip to Willingen (Sauerland).
There was a Bike Fair, mainly for MTB, but that was not the main reason to go there.
If you are interested in Skiing and Ski Jumping you may have heard of Willlingen.
In wintertime the region is full of Dutch people coming for skiing.

I started at Hoppecke near Brilon, but the way through the woods was often too muddy and too steep.
The rear wheel started to spin so I often had to push the bike.
In Willingen I spent hardly 30min on this bike fair only to get lost in the woods afterwards.
Too many tracks and not enough signs
Somehow I made it to the spring of the Diemel river (near Usseln), following the river (advantage: no more steep hills)
down to Diemel Lake. I went around the lake, crossing another mountain, back to Hoppecke.

Instead of doing estimated 55km it were 73km, in 6hours including breakes. I am totally knackered now.
The Schlumpf Mountaindrive worked fine, this time I was the weak spot.
Sauerland is too hard for me. I will go back to Eggegebirge and Teutoburger Wald.

Gunnar

I recently joined the Cambridge branch, and a couple of weeks ago took my Dahon Jetstream P8 along for an after work evening ride through the Cambridge countryside, having just got off the train from London.

There were four of us, and two of us riding Dahons, the other being a Curve D3 (I think). There was also an Airnimal in the mix as well so quite a turn out for the folders. In the end we covered 22 miles, stopping at 9pm for a pint in a local pub.

If you are in the UK and looking for a non-racing club to make use of your Dahon, I'd recommend checking out your local club.

Great Glen Way On A Hammerhead (warning Loads Of Pics)

The Great Glen Way is an offroad track running high alongside the Lochs of the Great Glen. The section I rode was Inverness to Drumnadrochit and then back via road to home in Dingwall. Not far - about 45 miles.

I wasn't intending to ride all of it, seeing as I was on a 20" wheel Dahon Hammerhead single speed on a gearing of 62"

I was just going to take a look at the start, but you know how it is once you start...

The start from Inverness is straightforward enough. Zero feet at the Caledonian Canal

The climbing starts almost immediately. It was doable (just) on the Dahon so it shouldn't present a problem to a mtb with gears.

The first part is mainly through forestry and the surface is pretty smooth and firm to start.

There's a bit of road riding after a bit then more smooth track, but the surface becomes a bit soft and you can feel the drag. Again nothing to worry a mtb, but a nuisance on a road tyre.

The highlight is around the halfway mark.

If you don't stop at Rory's cafe you're missing a memorable eating establishment. Let's say it is somewhat eccentric seeing as it is in the middle of nowhere and lacks such amenities as walls or a roof... (He did have a roof but it collapsed due to the heavy snowfall this winter)

Most of the trees in that area along the track have been planted by Rory, something like 48,000 if I recall. Some people talk environment, a very few really do it.

Rollin' On 20s Calendar 2010

Happy new year, everybody--here's a new folding bike adventures calendar for ya! Just like the 2009 edition I made last year, this 2010 version documents some of the most interesting rides on my Dahon Jetstream XP and Debbie's KHS F20 Westwood during our RV travels around the country the previous year. According to my cycling log, I rode in 12 states in 2009 (CO, UT, AZ, TX, AL, GA, TN, WI, MI, MN, IL, OK). Surprisingly, that is the same number as in 2008, although many of the states are different.

The year started out with some snowy road riding in Colorado, but we then got lucky with a couple weeks of warm weather in early February and squeezed in some amazing rides in Moab, Utah on our way south to Arizona for the spring riding season. I took full advantage the warmth and ample mountain biking opportunities around Phoenix and Tucson, and racked up some 500 miles of gnarly trails in 5 weeks before we had to head back to our home base of Austin, Texas for a short stay.

Sneaked in a day-ride at Oak Mountain State Park in Alabama on our way east to Georgia, where I spent almost six months working on several new driving simulation projects. Happily, that work was located in the northern part of Georgia, so I got out for several long, challenging days in the mountains around Dahlonega and Ellijay. (Man, is Georgia sweltering in the summer!) We were there so long I joined the local Gainesville chapter of SORBA / IMBA, tagged along on a group ride, and entered my first mountain bike racing event, a time trial at their excellent local MTB spot Chicopee Woods. Not surprisingly given my 20-inch wheels, I was not exactly fast over the rather technical loop, but I did finish less than a minute off the podium in the "40+ male novice racer" class (and I didn't crash!) so that was a pretty satisfying experience.

As fall arrived and temperatures in Georgia finally started to moderate, we (naturally) packed up and headed north. Waaaay north, straight into wintertime it seemed, with snow falling in early October. We spent a month or so exploring the towns and forests of Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and even tossed in a day trip over to Duluth, Minnesota to sample the lumpy trails of Piedmont Park and to catch the fantastic Race Across the Sky mountain biking movie on the big screen.

Finished out the year with a couple of chilly months working the Chicago area, where weather and terrain combined to favor urban riding over mountain biking, although I did manage to find a little dirt in the form of the southern segment of the Des Planies River Trail and the respectable singletrack of Palos Park. We headed south to Texas just in time for Christmas, and I got in an excellent day of riding rocks at Turkey Mountain Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the way down.

So, it's been a busy year (too busy to post much, sorry!) but that's the quick recap. Hope y'all enjoy the calendar and have a fine 2010!

Cheers,
Carey

(NOTE: for full visual impact, click here to download a high-resolution PDF version of the calendar)

"Recalling great rides on our twenty-inch folding bikes from the previous year. . ."

"Started the new year in style with a snowy fifty mile road ride on Rim Rock Drive in Grand Junction, CO"

"Wintertime in MTB Mecca (Moab, UT) included a day-long adventure combining Gemini Bridges, Gold Bar Rim, Portal, and Poison Spider."

"Moab terrain ranged from ultra-grippy sandstone on the Slickrock trail to seemingly endless stretches of fine, deep sand on Poison Spider."

"We escaped from winter to glorious spring riding conditions in the rocky mountains and blooming deserts of Arizona."

"The Pass Mountain loop was a hidden jewel just north of Phoenix, while good times were had by all on the AZ Spring Fling group ride south of Tucson."

"A short stay in Austin, TX included several fun rides with friends Don and Dave at Muleshoe and Walnut Creek parks."

[continues below...]

Riding In Spain

Hi
After arriving from crossing Spain last July, I thought that my new Speed TR was the best bike I ever had. I send it to the official dealer in my town to get it revised after his first 950 Km just to be careful and ride safe. I told them to verify the spoke tension and the side stand. In fact I was hearing little noises "clics" from spokes, althow none was broke or lose. Whith the four bags in place, the bike was impossible to park whitout the help of a tree or a wall.
The day after I received a phone call from the shop, informing me that when they were dismantling the steering bearings the balls felted in the ground and it would be necessary new ones; It would take some more time to repair. Of course I get warried, becaming in doubts relatively to the quality of the bike and increased doubts about the sugested use of this model in "exploring Vietnam" as the brand proclaims. What have you to say to this occurence?

Hi!!
Anyone in Indonesia here?
My house is in Jakarta but I study in Bandung so I rent a room there. I go to Jakarta in Friday Evening and back to Bandung in Sunday at least once in a month. I fold my Matrix and put it behind the back seat of a bus (Jakarta-Bandung si about 126 km).
So if there is anyone here who live between those cities, maybe we could ride together sometimes...

Regards,
Zulfikar.

Folder Bike Fest In Philly June 5-6-7

ROUND UP USA
FOLDER BIKE FEST
Comes to Philadelphia

June 6-7-8, 2009
Trophy Bikes
3131 Walnut St.
University City
Philadelphia
215.222.2020
www.trophybikes.com/events

The biggest new thing in the bike world is bikes that get small and go fast. See and test ride the latest folder bikes.

If you’re already a folder rider, join a folder bike-on-rail excursion.

Watch (or enter) a “fast-fold showdown”

And more.

This FREE event, now in its 7th year, is for riders and fans of folding bicycles. Trophy Bikes, the host of the Round Up Folder Fest is one of the largest retailers of folder bikes; they’ll be displaying all sorts of clever new folder designs and explaining what’s making folders the fastest-growing bike category in the U.S.

<more>
“These bikes go places regular bikes can’t—like car trunks, office building and transit,” explains Trophy Bikes co-owner Michael McGettigan, who uses a British-made Brompton for his commute. “They also foil thieves, since you can stash them inside. I don’t even carry a lock when I’m on my folder.”

Peter Reich, the inventor of the Swift folder bike, will be offering a demonstration, and meet up with other folder experts to debate the pros and cons of various folder designs.

Until recently, folder bikes had a bad reputation in this country, thanks to scores of cheap and heavy models, sold mostly online and at big box stores. But today’s modern folders are light, fast and some titanium models can even challenge big wheel bikes on the road.

The weekend-long event centers around Trophy Bikes in University City, but will roam around, making visits to Manayunk and on Sunday, to the TD Bank International Bicycle Championship, where folder fans will check out the race and show off their machines.

Complete schedule at: www.trophybikes.com/events.php

Rollin' On 20s Calendar 2009

So, I got inspired to wade through my photo archive and put together a 2009 calendar depicting some of my favorite rides from last year's travels around the country. I made it for friends and family (and, of course, my own wall!) but figured random strangers on the internet might enjoy it too, so here you go...

Each month's page features a pair of rides from that month of the previous year. I got to ride in 12 states in 2008 (NC, SC, FL, GA, VA, WV, PA, IL, NE, CO, WY, and UT) and most of them made it into the calendar. We spent the first half of the year on the east coast, then bee-lined across to Colorado and spent the second half of the year there, so CO is perhaps a little overrepresented... but that's not really such a bad thing, right?

Note that if you like the JPG version below, you can download a higher-res PDF version of the whole thing from the mountain biking page of our website (direct link here). Personally, I print out the pages and slide them into one of those transparent pouch things stuck to the wall above my desk, and change the page each month. I'll also note that it's completely free, and there are not even any ads to ignore or anything, so feel free to download for personal use if you like it.

This being a Dahon forum and all, you may wonder why no Dahon appears until September. Well, I was ready to buy an 08 Jetstream XP when it first appeared in December 07, but Dahon didn't deliver them to dealers until August 08, so I just keep riding my trusty KHS during the long, long wait. And when the bikes were finally ready, my order from Germany apparently took a round-the-world cruise courtesy of DHL, before finally arriving in late September. Anyway, presumably next year's calendar will be mostly Dahon.

Enjoy!

[continues below...]

The Bonny Banks Of Loch Lomond

As it was unusually unseasonal weather on Boxing Day (dry, calm and not icey!) I decided to take a ride on the Loch Lomond cycle track. It would make a great change from my usual commutes into the congested centre of Glasgow and help me work off my Christmas over indulgence in turkey, mince pies and McEwan's export!

This is exacty the sort of use for which I bought the Dahon (a Mu P8) - easily transporting it by car somewhere nice to cycle on my days off (though it's been doing well as a 100 mile a week commuter recently while my usual road bike's been off the road too!).

So unfolding the bike at Balloch (parking the car at Loch Lomond Shores), I set off heading North. The route was quite well sign-posted though the first 5 or 6 miles aren't too scenic, mainly following a track along the path of the main road (though safely away from the road for those not confident in traffic).

After about 5 or 6 miles the route branches off closer to the shore of the Loch and things improve a lot, becoming quieter and more scenic. Not long after this the route joins the side road to Luss - be aware of this if you're not expecting any on road sections as this narrow country road can be quite busy in summer!

The traffic in December was light however and after Luss the track leaves the road once more. Much of this route follows the line of the old Loch Lomond road which was closed to traffic when the new road to Tarbet was built quite a while ago. A few miles south of Firkin Point the track widens and this becomes more obvious as it follows several miles of wide 'road' used now only open to cyclists and walkers. It was a bit muddy or slippery in places due to fallen leaves but not too bad. The scenery by here was dramatic with Ben Lomond rising above the opposite banks, capped in a dusting of snow.

I decided to press on to Tarbet where the cycle route ends (you're on the road the whole way from here if you're going further!). Here I turned and headed the 16 miles back to my car at Balloch, making it a 32 mile round trip.

All in all it was a nice change from city centre streets and a good afternoon's cycling. The Northern half was by far the more scenic however. Recommended for anyone looking for a ride in Central Scotland!

Photo is of the Dahon between Firkin Point and Tarbet, looking north up Loch Lomond.

http://forum.dahon.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=2779

Pete.

United Arab Emirates, Anyone?

So, anybody here currently living in the cycle-unfriendly nation of the United Arab Emirates? Dubai, in particular? I'm getting a Dahon Vitesse D7HG soon, now that we're coming in to the end of the year and it's become bearable to cycle (now that it isn't 120-30 deg F/50deg C anymore). I'll be commuting to work but it'll be fun to meet up with other people, if you exist at all in this city that hates everything except big hulking cars
